Old Izannah Walker Doll.........uncovered and back to how she used to look.

$

I got a little sidetracked today.  I was asked what to do about an old Izannah Walker doll that had been badly repainted many many years ago.................so I set to and uncovered her original face to see what she looked like before someone fancied themselves to be an artist.  Below you will see the before and after.  Of course I have the permission of the owner to share these photos just so you can also enjoy how charming she really was before the thick over paint!
It is my belief that many years ago people took it upon themselves to repaint Izannahs perhaps to give to a child because they really could not afford a new doll....or perhaps they thought with all the paint loss and crackling that it would look better with a fresh new look..........or perhaps they wanted to pass down an old timeworn doll to a family member.  In any event, Please do not over paint an Izannah Walker doll.  They are so charming and wonderful just left as they are and they truly tell their own story by the love and wear that they have on their faces and bodies............after all, dolls were and are to be played with and loved for what they are.

Here she was BEFORE I removed the over-paint...................
Here she is AFTER the over paint was removed.

If you have an old Izannah Walker doll for sale, please let me know, I am interested in buying old Izannah Walker dolls in any condition.
If you have an old Izannah in need of some help, feel free to email me: toysintheattic@sympatico.ca

Just sharing...........................

I am sharing with you some photos of the wonderful 7000 sq. ft. building that my husband and I have built over the last few years.  He is an amazing carpenter and managed to incorporate the design of the building to compliment our 1860 stone house linked to an 1880 log house.
We had a devastating huge fire here at 3:54am on Friday.  Many thanks to the 2 fire departments and 42 firefighters that managed to save my studio for me.  We lost all of my husband's building and woodworking equipment and his collection of boy toys.  15 vehicles burned including my kid's snowmobiles and ATV's...................  Overwhelming.
It will be a while to rebuild but we will do it.
Needless to say there will not be a lot of wooden dolls on my site for a while.  I have some that I have been working on that are safe here in my studio and I will plug along with them and work on some Izannahs.  Patience!
I just thought I would share this even though I seldom put anything personal on my site.
Many many thanks for all the emails that we have received.
Kathy
This is my studio on the left end of the "L" shaped building that we built.
This is the woodworking part and my Husband's 4 bay garage that housed his vehicles and tools for his hobbies.
...............................................................Below is what we have today.  Very sad.

No one was hurt and we will rebuild and start again.

It is time.....................back to doll making I go!

I can not believe that is has been 2 months since the massive fire here.  We are re-building here even though it is winter and -22C.
My doll making time has been so limited with all that has been consuming my days here.
Having said that.......................I have a really wonderful 20" Izannah Walker doll completed, finally.
She has 7 perfect ringlets and a face that would fool anyone.  She is dressed in a 2 pc. outfit that I made from some wonderful early calico and her undergarments are matching and to die for!  They too are made from antique pieces that I have been saving for a special doll.  These photos of her do not make me happy.  She is so much nicer in person and her outfits made of antique cotton calico are not bright like in these photos at all.
If you have questions or would like more photos of this first doll since the fire here just email me toysintheattic@sympatico.ca
Thank you all for your patience and understanding for the lack of dolls lately.

I am posting some more photos here and you will have to scroll down to see more photos and the description.  I am not sure why I can only post a few photos at a time??
Enjoy!

I just could not resist finishing this little William Higgs wooden doll off into a pincushion doll.
Esther is 10" tall and all hand carved.  I had actually carved and painted her before the big fire here but this week I thought it was time to finish her off.
She is delightful even with her scraggly hair do!  Esther is dressed in early faded linen that is cream and coral but I think it might have originally have been red, you decide.  She has her little pocket at her hip and a tiny pair of scissors that actually work.  She is well weighted and stands perfectly.......ready to hold your pins and needles or just put her on a shelf.
Esther is now SOLD.

Just a quick not to say that I have a 20" Izannah Walker doll all finished and available.
Her clothing has taken me hours and hours of sewing but she is fabulous!  Her drop shoulder dress is amazing and from the finest antique calico.  I have made her a very sweet apron as well. She has 7 ringlets across the back of her neck and one on each side of her head in front of her ears.  Wonderful!

Her face will just make you smile!
She is about 7 1/2" tall and so charming.  The patina on her face is just wonderful.  She is dressed in early calico and she is wearing her tiny antique apron. She is not quite as bright as she looks in these photos.  The face close-ups are more accurate for her colouring.

This is a first for me, a bare foot Izannah Walker doll completed and she is Fabulous if I do say so myself!
She has wonderful matching 3pc undergarments just like old Izannahs and little socks!  Her dress is made from some very early rare calico in shades of madder, cream and mauve.  I made her a pinafore apron with trim.  Just to make her special she also has a straw bonnet trimmed in companion faded fabric to match her dress.  She has 5 soft ringlets across the back of her neck and a ringlet on either side of her face.  Lots of fine painting in this hair style!  She is special!
I am just working on getting some early style shoes on her but if you would like to see her in advance of me posting her here for sale, just email me.  toysintheattic@sympatico.ca
I decided to share a few photos of her as I was working on her...................

I don't normally post photos of dolls in the works but I just have to share some photos of Maud.  She is Sadie's sister measures 21".  Maud's head is so charming and worn looking and she has a sweetness about her.
She is all dressed in early antique faded calico from the 1850's.  She is tattered and aged could fool anyone walking into a room and seeing her perched in an antique chair.  Her antique leather arms are nothing short of fabulous!  These dolls are so charming and interesting to me.  I just had to try to make a couple.  Sadie was snapped up in minutes so if you have any interest in Maud just email me and I can send you some more photos if you like.

20" Izannah Walker Doll....................SOLD

With much hesitation I have decided to put this 20" Izannah Walker doll on my site for sale.  I was sure I could not part with her but I will.  She has bare feet with little stitched toes and is wearing little handmade socks and shoes that I made just for her.  Her undergarments are nothing short of wonderful and are all hand stitched and made from a very early antique baby gown from the UK.  Her dress is made from some amazing antique 1860's calico that I had been saving for a special doll.  She also has a handmade straw bonnet with matching fabric.  She has 5 loose soft ringlets across the back of her neck and swooped hair on the sided of her head.  You really can see the strands of her hair and it is amazing but hard to get photos of.  I cannot tell you how much nicer this doll is in person..............another reason I thought she might just live with me!
She is SOLD and if you have questions or would like more photos just email me: toysintheattic@sympatico.ca
Thanks for looking!

I must share the lovely email I just received.

Dear Kathy, I just can't get over her! - she is even more wonderful than I expected…..Her wooden face and body is such

a beautiful color and her hands are exquisitely delicate…..I really love her so much, and hope that I can order a few

little sisters for her or even a large QAD sometime….I have been drooling over the gorgeous ones you made before your

awful fire….They look so medieval to me……and just breathtaking….But for now, this little dear one is a great joy and is

sitting on the mantle with a few old pincushions for company……Thank you so very much, Kathy, you are just a special

doll maker!

Sandy
